HI, I'M Shanekwa Pruitt

I believe life holds both astounding beauty and profound struggle.  The beauty brings deep joy, the struggle terrible pain.  Personally, I acknowledge that both have been a part of my journey.

Professionally, I work daily to help clients navigate their way from struggle to beauty. With more than ten years of experience working in clinical, home, and school settings, I have witnessed the power of support firsthand.

By listening, validating, and employing intentional methods, I help clients in varying ages and stages of life.

START WITH A CONSULTATION

Your mental health is important and by seeking therapy you have taken a vital step toward self-care. Though credentials and experience are essential, one of the most important elements to successful therapy is the relationship you have with your therapist. Schedule a consultation at no cost and see if we might work well together.

If you need immediate assistance, please see the list of Urgent Assistance Resources.

WHAT TO EXPECT

+ FIRST SESSION

In the first session, I work to get to know you, as a whole. My primary focus is to ensure that you feel seen, heard, and supported. With your completed Life Questionnaire in hand, I will ask clarifying questions to better understand how you feel, your past experiences, and concerns. Our time together will also be used to identify your strengths, existing supports, and desired treatment goals. The session will move at your pace and feel conversational in style to ensure comfort.

+ SECOND SESSION

During the second session, we will continue to build trust and a safe space. There will be time to “check in” as I like to call it and discuss thoughts, feelings, and any new or forgotten information from the last session. Then, as a team, we will collaboratively create a treatment plan with measurable, well-defined goals. These identified goals will be our markers for growth, healing, and progress during subsequent sessions. Often, goals aim to help clients gain self-awareness, process negative emotions, find answers that are congruent with their values, and teach practical skills for coping.

+ THIRD SESSION & BEYOND

Sessions three and beyond will focus on “doing the work”. As a client, you will have the freedom to vent, share details, talk about your real feelings, ask questions, and do what you need to deal and heal. As your therapist, I will continue to listen, accompany you on the journey, and provide interventions to help you reach your goals. Typically, sessions will be scheduled once per week or bi-monthly. However, more frequent sessions may be suggested (such as two-times per week) depending on the level of symptoms, support, and need.

+ FINAL SESSION

Your final therapy session, often called the termination session, is important to reflect on how far you have come, say goodbye, and set-up any tune-up sessions (one session over the next several months to review progress). For additional questions about therapy, visit my FAQs
